Considering the importance of grammatical knowledge in the writing
process, this research aims to find out the grammatical errors based on surface
strategy taxonomy that focused on the (1) Omission error, (2) Addition errors, (3)
Misformation errors, and (4) Misordering errrors that appear in essay writing text
of second semester students of English education study program at STKIP PGRI
Sidoarjo. The method of of this research was a descriptive qualitative study. The
subject and data source were collected from the second semester students of
English Study Program 2016 A class. The key instrument used in this research is
the researcher and writing compositions as document. Dulay’s, Burt, and Krashen
theory becomes the main key in the data analysis. Based on the analysis of the
grammatical errors, four types of errors were found. These four errors were:
Omission that is the highest error was found 103 times or 44.39%, the second was
misformation error that was committed 61 times or 26.29%, and the third was
misordering errors that was commited 38 times or 16.38%, and the last addition
error occurred 30 times or 12.94%. Based on the result, it is figured out that the
students still made errors while conducting the text. For suggestion, the teachers
should be aware on grammatical errors in writing. The students are expected to
increase their knowledge on the English grammar, at least reduce those errors, and
also for the further researcher, it is expected that it will be more increased in
quality and different field, for example linguistics strategy taxonomy.
