The present study was conducted to find out the techniques of teaching speaking. This study was aimed at describing technique used and the problem faced by the teacher in teaching speaking when applied that techniques, especially for the students of X MM 1 at SMK PGRI 3 SIDOARJO. The design applied for the research was principally descriptive qualitative since this research included collecting data in order to answer questions concerning the current condition. The instruments used were observation, field note, and interview. The data taken were analyzed, classified, and presented in accordance with the research problems of the teaching speaking techniques. The finding showed that the teacher used discussion and retelling story techniques in teaching speaking. Furthermore, the problem faced by the teacher in the implementation this technique was not all the topic could used as material for discussion, to control situation of the class, to manage the time during discussion, and the ability of students was not the same. In conclusion, teaching speaking in X MM 1 used discussion and retelling story. Because could make a passive student could raise the curiosity that makes them want to interact with group, make the students motivated to speak English and also make the students more active. The problem faced by the teacher in the implementation of this technique was not all the topic could used as material for discussion, to control situation of the class, to manage the time during discussion, and the ability of students is not the same. Therefore, it was suggested that the English teacher must choose the technique which suitable with the material and condition of the students. The student suggested will make their ability of speaking English be better. And the further researcher suggested the findings of this study will be used as the research resource of the future research on the similar problem.
