Keywords: Speaking, Descriptive Text, and Tour Guide Technique
The students are regarded still have difficulty in speaking activity. So, a
teacher should be creative in teaching of speaking. Some technique is suggested to
be used and the tour guide technique is a new technique to make students more
expressing in the teaching speaking. The appropriate composition for speaking
exercise is descriptive text. So, there are two research question in this study, first “
How is the implementation of tour guide technique in teaching speaking of
descriptive text to tenth grade students at SMAN 1 Wonoayu Sidoarjo?” and “
How are the students’ respose on the implementation of tour guide technique in
teaching speaking of descriptive text?”. Admittedly, speaking is the most
important skill from four basic skills and also lead them to make interaction in the
society by using the language. Dealing with speaking activity, using tour guide
technique may be motivating and interesting. There are several steps; teacher give
explaination first about descriptive text, e.g the generic structure and language
features, second teacher make group discussion in the class, third the students
discuss about they want to present, they must choose one between historical place
or ecotourism object, the last the students have to present about that place. The
researcher uses descriptive qualitative design in order to obtain the information.
The data of the study is the teacher’s activity and the students’ composition that
are collected in form of observation checklist. Then, the data are analyzed
qualitatively in descriptive way. The data are obtained through two times
observation during two meetings that focuses in learning the appropriate way in
using tour guide technique to teach descriptive text. The teacher used tour guide
technique in teaching speaking with several steps; teacher gave explaination,
teacher devided the students become group randomly and gave name of the group
with the city in Indonesia, the students discuss about what they want to present,
and the last the students acted as a tour guide in front of the class. Using tour
guide technique made the students more interesting, helping them to more
expressing when they discribe about something. This techique made the students
more creative and give them different situation in learning English.
